Topaz Inclusions: Part 1

Examining Topaz inclusions in a multipart series of posts. First picture displays a trademark Topaz feature. Considered as one of the most important internal features of Topaz, these are both beautiful to examine and very interesting in terms of their formation.

“In congruence with the hydrothermal growth-environment it is truly rich in liquid inclusions. Of these there is a difference between the syngenetic primary and the syngenetic secondary. The former are composed of galaxies of minute negative crystals elongated parallel to the c-axis, lying in planes parallel to the prism faces. Because of their unique forms and general distribution, these portray the most important and diagnostic internal feature.” – PhotoAtlas Vol 1 – Pg. 386

The remaining 4 photomicrographs display the change in appearance of an inclusion under gradually varying lighting environments. A visible shift can be examined at every step. Examining the same inclusion using different illumination techniques (and a combination of them) is one of the most imperative skills that young/fresh gemologists should pick up on and make a habit of.
