Peridot Inclusions – 6

#gemystique

Examining ludwigite-vonsenite needles in Pakistani Peridot this week. These needles vary in appearance. Ranging from opaque black to very dark brown in color, they can have a very fine hair like appearance and can also be really thick. Pakistani Peridots may also contain extremely thin to relatively thick, hair-fine to acicular yellow fibers occasionally. These needles and fibers hint at high temperature contact metamorphic deposit from which their host peridot originates, which in this case is Supat, Pakistan.

Detailed examination reveals some fascinating images where these needles can be seen to intersect each other.

Such inclusions have also been reported to occur in Peridots from other regions.

“Ludwigite isomorphous with vonsenite forming hair fine fibers and coarser needles also occurs in Peridot from South Africa suggesting a very analogous formation in similar mother rocks as in Pakistan.” Photo Atlas Vol 2- Pg. 531
