From the archives: Swat Emeralds
“I got to examine this particular emerald more than a year ago. It was hidden in a large lot and luckily, I spotted it and got a chance to take a couple of quick clicks. Only after admiring it in the microscope for a very long time.
While emeralds from the Swat region in Pakistan are not famously associated with pyrite inclusions, occasionally they do tend to show up. Having examined a lot of rough from this region, I have seen my share of pyrite in emeralds from these mines but never have I seen such a pronounced and beautifully oriented pyrite inclusion as shown above. Needless to say, I fell in love with this specimen immediately. The way this inclusion is oriented from the surface to the inside of the stone is indescribably beautiful.
My experience so far with emeralds from this region always makes me wonder about the countless unique emerald treasures that are still hidden away from the world, waiting to be discovered and examined.”
